On October 3, 1962, the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first OMEGA watch to be worn in space, when astronaut Walter Schirra chose it for the Sigma 7 mission of Project Mercury. The new version is a tribute to that pioneering timepiece and repurposes the same second-generation Speedmaster style with a modern twist.
The 39.70 mm case is made of polished and brushed stainless steel and is accompanied by a black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle. The bezel ring is made of black aluminum and sports the famous tachymeter scale with “Dot Over Ninety.”
Under the new hexalite-shaped sapphire crystal, the blue-gray dial has a CVD treatment to replicate the hue of some CK 2998 watches made in the 1960s. In addition to the “Alpha” hour/minute markers and hands filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, the central baton seconds hand is painted white to match the applied markers. The watch has three counters: a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock and a small seconds counter at 9 o'clock.
The vintage OMEGA logo is applied to the dial and crown, while the case back sports the famous hippocampus medallion and the engravings “FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.”
The watch is powered by Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 3861, which corresponds to the most up-to-date version of Caliber 321 worn by astronauts in space. All watches are delivered in a special presentation box with a “LEGENDARY MOONWATCH” booklet inside.
